SEO is all about making your website better in Google’s eyes.
What this means is SEO is work on and to your website that earns respect from Google. Respect that wins you more traffic. Think of Google like a middle man.
Someone searches “cosmetic dentist near me” on their mobile phone. Google takes that and looks for the best cosmetic dentist website it can find that also has a dental practice a reasonable distance from you.
But what does Google consider to be a great website?
This is determined by a highly complex, ever changing algorithm that analyses thousands of factors. One of the oldest and still super important factors is how many links your website has coming to it. Years ago, it was the quantity that carried a lot of weight, now it’s the quality of those links. For example a government website or a university linking to you, carries more weight than a neighbours blog. Another factor is the relevance and quality of the written content, do people actually read it, share it, return to it. Then there is the usability, is your website easy to navigate and find information, FAQs, prices, etc. But don’t forget about the technical… have you got too many large chunks of code or plugins, multiple scripts and big images slowing it down? These are just some of the important factors that go into SEO.
An analogy that often helps explain what an SEO team does is to compare it to a racing car pit team. You are the driver of your website and like a race car, your website is in a competition to get to the number 1 podium position at the top of Google. Your SEO team, like your pit crew, helps you get there.
One thing you need to know about SEO is that it takes time. Google will not give your new website a top ranking, no matter how good it is. You still need to earn your spot and prove you are better than the sites above you over a long period of time.
